Through these pomes about fruit the children will learn how to write a poem about fruit using their senses vocabulary in a shape and join with others to make a ‘fruit salad’ poetry sequence.

Through this text the children will write a letter in role persuading characters to save the trees. they will also write a letter as themselves persuading local people to save the trees

This text helped the children to write a recount of historical events from the text from Major Glad’s point of view

Autumn 1

This unit of work has been devised for the whole school to work together using this text to support a transition curriculum  as our children return to school.

 

This is a literacy based unit and aims to support reading and writing for pleasure across the school. The age-appropriate activities will provide opportunities for children to use writing for a range of purposes including personal response as well as shared reading and meaning-making. The planned activities will also:

  • Provide a framework for children to re-engage socially with each other and their wider community
  • Suggest opportunities to engage positively with the outdoor environment
  • Stimulate thinking and talk about world events and the impact of these events on individuals and the wider world
  • Provide a safe forum to share thoughts, concerns, ideas and personal responses;
  •  Use art and writing to help children respond personally to experiences they have had

 

The planned experiences will support children and schools to engage in reflections around some of the thoughts, feelings and responses arising from the disruption caused the COVID-19 pandemic. We will use the book as a basis for exploring how our world view and our place in it has evolved, and been shaped and influenced by events, during this period. The activities will support children to develop a sense of themselves as citizens of the world and belonging to a wider community, providing them with a sense of agency and inspiring them to contribute to making the world around them a better place.

Autumn 2

Beegu by: Alexis Deacon 

 

The story tells of an alien called Beegu who is not supposed to be on Earth. She is lost. She is a friendly little creature, but the Earth People don't seem very welcoming at all. However, so far she has only met the BIG ones. The little ones are a different matter. 

 

Aliens and unusual friendships will be explored through this story. 

Writing

Throughout the year the children will be given opportunities to write a range of different text types.

These will mostly be taught through the use of high quality texts that the children will be studying.

An important focus in writing in Class 2 is handwriting ensuring that the form and orientation of their letters is correct. The children will have discreet handwriting lessons and this will also be focused within Phonics and English sessions.

 

Another important focus is the correct use of punctuation: capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, question marks and exclamation marks. The children will also be taught how to use these correctly in their writing but we'd like parents to encourage children to use these when writing at home.

Reading

We use a variety of reading schemes to foster our love and enjoyment of reading.

 

Children have their own reading books that they can change themselves on a regular basis in class and a reading record for parents and staff to record when they have read. We recommend reading at home as regularly as possible, every day for 20 minutes if possible, with lots of discussion about the book and questions about what has happened, predicting what could happen next, why the author used certain words and what they enjoyed about the book.

 

Children will also have a guided reading session with the teacher across the week when there will be a specific focus on a book that they read as a group.

Spelling

The lists below are words that your child will be learning to spell throughout their time in Class 2. These lists are a mixture of words that we encourage children to use in their writing and words that can often be misspelled. We would be grateful if you could support your child at home in discussing, learning to read and spell the words from the list relevant to their year group.

 

Spelling Homework - Each child will be given a list of spellings on a Monday. Spelling test takes place on the following Monday.
