Art and D&T

2025-26

Spring 1, 2026

Clay Creatures

We will begin this topic by exploring different techniques to shape and join clay - kneading, rolling, pinching, coiling, scoring and joining.

       IMG_7770[1].JPG   IMG_7766[1].JPG   IMG_7764[1].JPG   IMG_7768[1].JPG   IMG_7767[1].JPG

We then looked at the work of artists who had made characterful clay sculptures before designing our own clay creatures.

Simple Programming and Control

In this unit of work children using Crumble Kit components to design and make a night light that is controlled by a microcontroller and is activated when it gets dark.

Drawing for Purpose

Elements of Art: Introduction!

We will begin by exploring how different artists and designers use drawing to record and express.

After closely observing an object, we drew it, looking from different perspectives.

Autumn 2, 2025

Design and Technology - Crossley Hall Primary School : Crossley Hall Primary School

This half-term our focus subject will be Design Technology

Design Technology Project 1- 2D Shape to a 3D Product

We began this project by looking at different money purses and wallets. We analysed what we liked and what works well.

 IMG_7863[1](1).JPG  IMG_7866[1].jpg  IMG_7864[1].JPG  IMG_7867[1].jpg  IMG_7865[1].JPG

The children were then shown a selection of materials they could use to make thier own money container. They had to think about size, shape, pockets and fasteners before drawing and labelling their own designs.

With a little help they used sewing, velcro and glue to assemble their purse/ wallet, lastly adding any decoration.

Finally, we had to test our designs - did they hold coins and cards securely?

Design Technology Project 2 - Pneumatics

We began this project by researching how some objects use air to work e.g. foot pump, beach ball, recorder.

After this initial research we designed our own 'moving monster' using a hand pump to make it work.

We had lots of fun making these on our Elf Day!

IMG_7220[1].JPG   IMG_7230[1].JPG      IMG_7226[1].JPG         IMG_7232[1].JPG

After making our designs we had to test them to see if they worked and then evaluated our end product.

2024-25

Summer 1, 2025

Art & Design - Henri Roueau

The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau | Image Gallery

We will learn about this French artist, his life, work and why he was such an important painter. We will apply some of his techniques to make our own rainforest pictures, linked to our geography theme

We will also be working on the NEP Art Project, this year the theme is 'Pride', please look out for our class work, to be displayed at Baron's Quay.

Summer 2, 2025

Design Technology - Shell Structure

Design and Technology - Crossley Hall Primary School : Crossley Hall Primary School

This will be linked to our Healthy Week, we will design, make and then evaluate a structure suitable to carry our lunch.

Spring 1, 2025

Art & Design - L.S.Lowry

The children will have the opportunity to explore the life and work of Lowry and to learn about the industrial landscape that provided the subject of many of his paintings. Each lesson in the unit focuses on improving a key skill in art and design; comparing works of art, colour mixing, perspective, drawing figures and drawing buildings. At the end of the unit children will have used their knowledge and skills to create a multimedia collage in the style of the artist.

Lowry Workshop 29.2.25

We worked with the artist Mandy to sketch and paint in the style of Lowry.

Autumn 1,2024

Charcoal - we will draw and explore using charcoal as a medium.

Creating a tonal range with charcoal -

Autumn 2, 2024

Design Technology - levers and linkages

This unit gives children opportunities to develop their understanding of mechanical systems. Following instructions on how to make different types of lever and linkage mechanisms gives children experience and information to draw on when developing their own ideas for a Christmas Card.

We started with a reverse motion linkage:

We then went on to parallel linkages and a push-pull linkage:

Next we put them together to make our snapping crocodiles:
