In EYFS the children have a short daily maths session which then leads into their free time where they are encouraged to continue to explore their interest in number, shape, pattern, measurements etc.

Spring

We have looked at different scales- digital and balancing scales. First, we looked at balancing scales we knew if something was heavy because one of the buckets on the side touched the floor. We learnt new vocabulary heavy, heavier, light, lighter and balanced. We did lots of estimating to guess if something was going to be heavier or lighter. When we looked at digital scales, we read the digits and worked with a partner to find something that was heavier or lighter.

Children will  explore different representations of 1, 2 and 3.  First we will focus on finding the representations then lookf at making the representation.  We will use lots of equipment so children can match numerals and quantities.  We will then move on to looking at 1 more and 1 less with the aim being that the Children should notice that when they find 1 less, the numbers and amounts reduce because they are taking 1 and when they find 1 more the numbers and amounts are increased.

We enjoyed looked at height and deciding if things were tall or short. We had lots of fun using a meter stick and measuring things in the classroom. We also looked at big and small there were lots of big things in the classroom and we found things that were smaller.
