2025-2026
Spring
In Spring term the children will be learning about Everyday Materials.
By the end of the term the children will be able to ...
- Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made by naming specific objects and a range of materials, including objects that are made of more than one material.
- Identity and name a variety of everyday materials (wood, plastic, glass, metal, brick, paper, cardboard, fabric, rubber, water and rock).
- Identify and classify objects based on which material they are made of.
- Describe the simple physical properties of everyday materials (hard, soft, shiny, dull, stretchy, stiff, bendy, rough, smooth, transparent, opaque, waterproof and absorbent).
- Perform simple tests to identify some properties.
- Classify materials into groups on the basis of their simple physical properties.
- Make simple comparisons of materials based on their simple physical properties.
- Use observations in enquiries to suggest answers to a question.
- Begin to understand what recycling is and what it means to be environmentally friendly.

Autumn
In Autumn term the children will learning about Animals including Humans.
They will...
- notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults.
- find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans for survival (water, food and air).
- describe the importance of human of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene.

Testing their predictions to see the effects of exercise on the body. The children checked thier pulse before and after exercise to see if it sped up.

2024-2025

This term we are going to be learning about Plants.
We will be covering the following objectives.
- idenitfy and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees
- identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees
- Observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants
- Find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy
To start our unit of work, the children were given a selection of different seeds and bulbs which they studied and predicted what they thought they might grow into. The children then planted a selection of the seeds and bulbs inorder to be able to observe how they change over time.

The children were given some mature plants and exmained them closely. They identified their different parts and learnt about their role.
The children look at a variety of common garden and wild plants and identified them.

The children were given identification sheets to help them identify trees growing in our school grounds. They also identified other trees that are found in our local area.
The children have been keeping up-to date with their seed diaries.

This term we are going to be learning about Uses of Materials.
We will be covering the following objectives.
- Identify and compare the suitability of a varitey of everyday materials including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for partiticular uses
- Find out how the shapes of solid objects made from materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching
The children start this unit by identifying different materials and their properties.

The children are going to be investigating which materials can bend, twist, stretch and be squashed. In order to understand what this means we practised each of these moves with plasticine.

This term we are going to be learning about Animals inluding Humans.
We will be covering the following objectives.
- identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
- identify and name a varitey of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
- describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets)
- identify, name, draw and label basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.
We started our unit of work but identify different parts of the human body.

The children drew a self portrait and identified different features of their face. We discussed what some of these features are used for.
This lead on to use learning about each of the five senses. The children conducted a listening walk around the school, used their eyes to identify objects hidden within picture, touched different objects in school and recorded how they felt, smelt different products and tasted different items. It was lots of fun.
We identifed different common animals and sorted them into the five different animals groups.

Seasonal Changes
Throughout the year we are going to be investigating seasonal changes that take place in our school grounds and around us.
We are going to be covering the following objectives.
- observe changes across the four seasons
- observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
January 2025
The children really enjoyed exploring the snow as part of our Seasonl changes work based on Winter.
