Phonics and Guided Reading
Phonics
Children are taught to learn the various different sounds in 3 different sets. Each sound comes with a special rhyme to help you remember it and also a selection of real an nonsense words to help prepare children for their phonics screening test which takes place in the summer term of Year 1.
Children have a 40 minute phonic/guided reading session daily. Children are spilt into groups where they complete a 20 minute speed sound session which will look at a new sound a day, children will write and read words with this sound in. They will then have a 20 minute guided reading session where they read a text a week to build up fluency and accuarcy.
Guided Reading
Children will focus on a key text throughout the week. they will be heard every day by their group lead and then on a Thursday the children will be able to take a copy of the book home untill the following Wednesday when it will be changed for the new guided reading text.
Alongside this children will receieve 1 additional book per week on a Monday. they will keep this book for a week untill the follwoing Monday.
You can help your children at home by using pure sounds when reading with them. Below is a video to help with this.

Year 1
In the summer term children will complete the phonics screening check. This is a national assessment that is taken by children in England in Year 1. The aim of the check is to assess your child's ability to use their phonics skills to read a range of words and non-words (made-up words that are used to test phonics skills). Below is a link to access to past papers to practise at home.
